Winter is Here! Here’s 5 Things You Must Have in Your Truck 🚛❄️

Must-Have Gear for Truckers Battling the Cold and Snow

According to the FMCSA about 22% crashes in the past few years are weather-related. As a truck driver myself, I’ve experienced firsthand how harsh winter conditions can be on the road. I recently asked my followers on Instagram what winter essentials they swear by in their semi-trucks, so here are the Top 5 Must-Haves for your truck this winter:

1. A Full Tank of Fuel ⛽

It seems like a no-brainer, right? But it’s easy to forget. Having a full tank of fuel is absolutely essential when you're dealing with freezing temperatures. You don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with an empty tank when your engine refuses to start because of the cold. I always kept my tank at least half full, and so should you.

2. Food and Water 🍔💧

Winter conditions can be unpredictable, and being stuck for long hours or overnight on the road is a real possibility. That’s why food and water are a must. It doesn’t matter what kind of food - whether it’s snacks or a healthy meal - just make sure you have enough to keep you going. And of course, you need bottled water to keep you hydrated. Don’t forget about a thermos of hot coffee or tea to keep you warm!

3. A Blanket 🛏️

No, this isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity! A warm blanket can be a lifesaver if you find yourself stranded on a cold winter night. It’s a simple item, but it could make the difference between shivering all night and staying cozy while you wait for help. I recommend having a few thick, insulated blankets in your truck at all times.

4. Chains for Your Tires 🛠️

In California for example, winter storms often cause major disruptions in mountainous areas like the Sierra Nevada. Up to 100 trucks can be stranded in a single snowstorm on I-80 due to not having chains. And we are all hearing about closed roads and trucks getting stuck in ND, IA or CO. Even the fact that chain laws variate by state, it's a good idea to carry at least 4 chains (2 for the drive axle and 2 for the trailer axles) to stay fully prepared and to ensure you can comply with varying regulations.

5. An Extra Battery for Your Truck 🔋

Cold weather can drain your battery faster than you think. An extra battery in your truck is a lifesaver when you’re dealing with freezing temperatures. If your truck won’t start because the battery’s too weak, having a backup means you won’t be stuck waiting for roadside assistance in the freezing cold. Make sure it’s properly stored and charged, ready to go when you need it most!

Bonus Tip: You might want to check your truck's anti-freeze levels and keep your windshield washer fluid topped up, too. These small things can go a long way in helping you stay safe and comfortable on the road.

Winter is Here, and with the right gear, you'll be ready to tackle whatever the season throws at you. Stay safe, stay warm, and keep those wheels rolling!

Remember: a little preparation goes a long way. What are your winter must-haves for the truck?

Safe travels! ❄️🚛
